The "Third Place"

Because I haven’t moved in to my new house yet, I still only have internet here when I decide to visit one of the coffee shops downtown.  Luckily these are very pleasant places to spend a morning or afternoon.  Lonely Planet describes them as something like “ex-pat oases,” which is about right.  The Mekong and many of Vientiane’s main sights are in walking distance of downtown so ex-pats and backpackers abound.  When I need a bit of air-conditioning, wi-fi, a sandwich, or some coffee, I set up at one of these cafes, perhaps with a copy of the Vientiane Times (the only English newspaper), and can blog and facebook to my heart’s delight.

Joma coffeeshop and bakery

My two favorite hangouts are Joma and Scandinavian Bakery, which are right around the corner from one another.  I’ve had the “small-town” experience of running into people I know downtown four times already, despite the fact that I’ve been here just over a week, and only know about 15 people in town.  Though Vientiane felt overwhelming at first, it is quickly becoming familiar.  At the moment, I’m sitting on the porch of the Scandinavian Bakery, looking out at the Namphou Fountain, and enjoying the $3 “Scandinavian Special” (sandwich, coffee, and juice).  Good thing I’m starting work soon, because I could easily get used to life being this relaxed.
